07.08.25 Environmental sustainability, disaster preparedness highlighted

Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Haji Mohamad Danial @ Tekpin bin Ya’akub underscored the growing complexity of global challenges in the implementation of Brunei Vision 2035, noting that these issues are not only domestic but are increasingly shaped by rapidly evolving global trends in technology, the economy and the environment.

He said this during the second day of the Second Meeting of the 21st LegCo Session. He identified climate change and natural disasters as among the most pressing concerns, citing their direct and increasing impact on the lives of citizens and the sustainability of national resources. Extreme weather conditions, unexpected flooding and threats to food and water security, he said, are no longer matters that can be ignored.

Yang Berhormat Haji Mohamad Danial @ Tekpin proposed to first streamline policies related to environmental protection and sustainable development; second, to introduce climate education and disaster awareness among youth; third, to encourage green research, innovation, and sustainable technology; and fourth, to integrate Bruneian and Islamic values in development efforts to ensure long-term well-being is not compromised.

He noted that 72 per cent of Brunei’s land remains forested, with 41 per cent designated as forest reserves – reflecting the country’s commitment to environmental conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources. This success, he said, is the result of integrated efforts between the government, private sector, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working together to protect Brunei’s natural heritage for future generations.

According to continuous monitoring by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) at the Ministry of Development, as of November 2022, air quality in all four districts remains safe and adheres to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

Yang Berhormat Haji Mohamad Danial @ Tekpin said these initiatives show Brunei’s development agenda is not solely focused on economic growth and physical expansion, but also on preserving the environment as a key pillar of sustainable development in line with Brunei Vision 2035.

He expressed hope that environmentally friendly initiatives would extend beyond community programmes and public awareness campaigns and be fully integrated into key development sectors – particularly construction and public infrastructure.

He said every construction project should prioritise sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

To support this direction, he called on the authorities to issue comprehensive guidelines aligned with environmental sustainability principles.

These should include stricter environmental impact assessments (EIA) and compliance with international green standards, ensuring that physical development contributes to the creation of greener, healthier, and more liveable cities and communities.

He also called for a comprehensive and integrated approach to flood mitigation, including improved drainage infrastructure, strategic land use planning, community education, and stronger youth and public involvement.
