09.05.25 Brunei delegates advocate youth inclusivity at AIPA

Brunei Darussalam’s Legislative Council participated in the 2nd Consultative Meeting of Young Parliamentarians of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), held in Klang, Selangor from May 5 to May 8.

Representing Brunei were Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee and Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan. The meeting was officially opened by Speaker of Malaysia’s House of Representatives and President of AIPA Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Johari bin Abdul. It was chaired by Member of the Malaysian Parliament Yang Berhormat Dato’ Indera Mohd Shahar bin Abdullah.

Held under the theme ‘Ensuring ASEAN’s Future: Youth in Action for Sustainability and Inclusivity’, the event served as a platform for young parliamentarians to champion the role of youth in shaping the future of ASEAN. During the meeting, the Brunei delegates attended two key dialogue sessions: ‘Advancing Sustainability – Empowering ASEAN Youth Voices’ and ‘Building Inclusive ASEAN Youth by Leveraging the Digital Age’.

The sessions provided opportunities for delegates from eight ASEAN member states to exchange ideas on cross-sectoral initiatives that boost youth engagement in policymaking and address global challenges such as climate change and the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). In his closing remarks, the Chair of the meeting Yang Berhormat Dato’ Indera Mohd Shahar, highlighted the importance of collective efforts in promoting youth inclusivity in ASEAN’s development.

Outcomes from the meeting will be presented at the 46th AIPA General Assembly, scheduled to take place later this year in Kuala Lumpur, with a strong focus on youth development across the region.
