18.03.26 Brunei strengthens food supply security

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah outlined the country’s efforts to strengthen the food supply through a comprehensive approach.
in his speech on the summary of the Policy Debate on the Supply Bill and Motion for the Development Fund at the First Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council Session, the minister noted that these efforts include strengthening supply sources, resilient supply chains, and market stability amidst global challenges such as geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, climate change, and fluctuations in commodity prices.

The food sector has shown positive development from 2015 to 2025, with gross domestic product increasing by an average of 1.3 per cent, driven by the growth of the fisheries and livestock sectors.

Broiler chicken production increased from around 23,000 to nearly 30,000 metric tonnes, egg production grew from 131 million to 205 million eggs, and aquaculture production rose from 984 to 1,533 metric tonnes. Additionally, the value of food commodity exports increased from BND6.98 million in 2015 to BND13.8 million in 2025.

To strengthen the food supply chain, the government has implemented several initiatives, including improving logistics efficiency and maritime connectivity through cooperation between Warisan Shipping Line Sdn Bhd and DP World Logistics Malaysia.

Other efforts include the development of the Agri-Tech Food Zone and the empowerment of innovation and research, such as sorghum cultivation and processing by Enserv Holding and commercial aquaculture facilities by Jets Sdn Bhd, which utilise solar energy and Artificial Intelligence (Al) systems.

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding between PDS Abattoir Sdn Bhd and a Singaporean company was signed to assess a pilot project on commercial cattle breeding to increase self-sufficiency in meat production.

From a market perspective, monitoring of basic food commodity prices is carried out to enhance price transparency, allowing proactive measures such as diversifying import sources to ensure the stability of the country’s food supply.
