20.11.25 Schools gain first-hand insight into legislative process

Several schools conducted educational visits to the Legislative Council throughout November as part of efforts to enhance students’ understanding of the role and functions of the Legislative Council (LegCo).

The programme aims to introduce students to the structure, purpose and workings of the Legislative Council, including how its sessions are conducted.

During the visits, students received briefing on the development and history of the LegCo since its re-establishment in 2004. They also toured the main areas of the Legislative Council Building, including the Mini Chamber, while learning about the building’s architectural elements inspired by the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy – a reflection of the identity and values upheld by the institution.

The students also took part in a mock debate activity, which provided hands-on exposure to the Legislative Council’s debating structure and the presentation process during sessions. The simulation encouraged them to understand the principles of deliberation and expressing viewpoints respectfully.

Schools participating in this month’s programme included Seri Mulia Sarjana International School, Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, Meragang Sixth Form Centre, Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary Scho0ol, Pengiran Muda Mahkota Primary School and International School Brunei.

Overall, the initiative seeks to strengthen civic awareness among students while nurturing interest in the Legislative Council’s role. Such early exposure is hoped to help shape a generation that understands the importance of the Legislative Council in the nation’s development and governance.
