21.05.26 Brunei and Singapore deepen legislative relations

SINGAPORE – Speaker of the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib paid a courtesy call on Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Istana on Thursday.

Also present during the courtesy call were Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Md Yusof; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman; Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Mumin; and Yang Berhormat Awang Zainol bin Haji Mohamed.

During the meeting, both sides expressed appreciation for the longstanding and strong bilateral ties between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore in various fields, including the economy and defence cooperation. Both countries are set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of defence cooperation and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement.

The Speaker of the Legislative Council also congratulated Singapore on assuming the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027. Both parties highlighted the importance of strengthening intra-ASEAN mechanisms, particularly in food security as well as oil and gas supply resilience.

The Speaker also conveyed appreciation to Singapore for its continued assistance to Brunei Darussalam, including medical treatment services for Bruneian citizens, training courses for Bruneian students in Singapore and civil service exchange programmes.

At the conclusion of the discussion, both sides agreed to further strengthen the close relations between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

The Speaker and delegation are in Singapore for a two-day official visit aimed at enhancing cooperation among ASEAN legislative institutions, particularly in strengthening bilateral ties between the legislative bodies of Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
