SINGAPORE – Speaker of the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib held talks with Singapore leaders during an official visit to the Republic of Singapore focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and bilateral ties between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore Seah Kian Peng. Accompanying the Speaker were four Legislative Council members: Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Md Yusof; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman; Yang Berhormat Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Mumin; and Yang Berhormat Zainol bin Haji Mohamed.
The official visit began on Wednesday with a courtesy call to Parliament Speaker Seah and a visit to the Parliament of Singapore, where discussions centred on efforts to further enhance relations between the Legislative Council and the Parliament of Singapore.
Among the matters discussed were opportunities for exchange visits to strengthen cooperation and deepen understanding of governance systems and parliamentary priorities in both countries. The two sides also exchanged views on increasing public access to and engagement with parliamentary institutions, as well as the importance of strengthening food security through agricultural and food technology initiatives.
Both sides also agreed to explore the establishment of a Friendship Group between the Legislative Council of Brunei Darussalam and the Parliament of Singapore to further strengthen parliamentary relations and cooperation.
On Thursday, the Speaker of the Legislative Council also paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong at the Istana. Discussions focused on efforts to further strengthen the long-standing bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
During the visit, members of the Legislative Council toured several strategic locations, including the Singapore City Gallery under the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The Speaker also visited Wisma Geylang Serai and Geylang Serai Market together with Parliament Speaker Seah.
The visit underscored the shared commitment of both countries to deepening bilateral cooperation and parliamentary ties, while providing a platform for the exchange of views, experiences and best practices in governance, public policy and legislative affairs.
