24.01.25 LegCo Speaker welcomes Malaysian counterpart

​Speaker of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib yesterday received a courtesy call from the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Johari bin Abdul.

Joining the Malaysian parliamentary delegation was the Speaker of the Pahang State Legislative Assembly Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Sharkar bin Haji Shamsudin, Member of Parliament for Bangi, Selangor Syahredzan bin Johan, Member of Parliament for Gopeng, Perak Tan Kar Hing and officers from Malaysia’s Parliament.

Also present were the Clerk to the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers’ Council and Clerk to the LegCo Dr Hajah Huraini binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hurairah, as well as LegCo members Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Md Yusof, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Yang Berhormat Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abdul Salam and Yang Berhormat Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Nasir.

The courtesy call was part of the official visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia to ASEAN member countries’ Parliaments in preparation for Malaysia’s chairmanship of the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), which will be held in Kuala Lumpur in September. The visit aims to strengthen strategic relationships among ASEAN countries as members of AIPA and to enhance cooperation in support of the ASEAN Community 2025 vision. AIPA plays an important role in supporting ASEAN regional development policies, particularly in ensuring that each member state’s Parliament plays an effective role in linking governments with the people to create a united, integrated and responsible community.

Discussions between both parties touched on several issues, including efforts to strengthen cooperation under AIPA, as well as the importance of enhancing relationships between Parliaments through the exchange of best practices, including innovations and the digitalisation process of parliament. The discussions also emphasised relations with AIPA Observer Members through closer cooperation, exploring opportunities to exchange expertise and knowledge that will benefit joint efforts in supporting the regional agenda.

In addition, both parties discussed strategic issues in the region, such as ASEAN security, sustainable development and other common interests. The visit reflected a mutual commitment to the relationship and highlighted the importance of synergy among ASEAN legislative institutions as AIPA members in addressing future challenges.

Before concluding his visit, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia, as Chair of AIPA, extended an official invitation to the Speaker of the LegCo to attend the 46th AIPA with a delegation from the LegCo.
