Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Lau How Teck underscored the wisdom and concern reflected in His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah, which emphasised peace, the well-being of the people and national prosperity.
He noted that among the key enhancements introduced were the decision to hold LegCo sessions twice a year and updates to the procedures and Code of Ethics for council members, aimed at strengthening the institution’s effectiveness and integrity. In line with the nation’s development priorities, Yang Berhormat Lau recognised the importance of economic diversification and expressed appreciation for the expansion of local exports to new international markets. He highlighted the contributions of both the oil and gas and non-oiland gas sectors in driving economic progress. However, he cautioned that economic diversification should not be taken lightly, stressing the need for a proactive approach to expand the country’s economic base and enhance global competitiveness.
He also underscored the agriculture sector as a key pillar in reducing reliance on food imports, ensuring national food security, and fostering long-term sustainable economic growth. Strengthening the sector, he said, requires the application of modern technology to enhance domestic production capacity and efficiency.
This approach aligns with Brunei Vision 2035, which advocates for the integration of artificial intelligence in national development to boost competitiveness and sectoral progress. Yang Berhormat Lau expressed hope that the ongoing initiatives in the agricultural sector would contribute to a more progressive, inclusive, and innovative industry, ultimately ensuring the well-being of the people and the country’s prosperity.
