28.02.25 Sessions enhance professionalism, governance, says Speaker of LegCo

Speaker of the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib lauded His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s far-reaching vision in recognising the need for a Code of Ethics for Legislative Council (LegCo) members during the second day of the first meeting of the 21st LegCo session yesterday.

He emphasised that this initiative will strengthen professionalism among members and enhance governance within the LegCo as a robust institution. He also expressed hope that the LegCo members will work together to make the national assembly a platform for constructive discussions, fostering positive ideas that contribute to national development and progress while ensuring the well-being of the people and residents of the country.

The Speaker of the Legislative Council highlighted His Majesty’s titah on several issues related to the national development agenda, particularly the decision to update the existing service charge policy, allowing stateless permanent residents to receive medical benefits similar to those provided to Brunei Darussalam citizens.

He said, “Alhamdulillah, we hold the highest regard for the leadership, authority and wisdom of His Majesty, who consistently cares for and closely follows the development of the LegCo.”

“In this regard, His Majesty has granted approval for the LegCo to convene twice a year starting this year, with updates to procedures and work processes in accordance with regulations that all members must fully observe.”

He added, “Hopefully, this will enhance the effectiveness of the conference through a more organised, focused and continuous discussion.”

He also stressed the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations of the meetings, stating that all parties must fully respect and comply with them to uphold the dignity of the national assembly as a key forum for dialogue between the government and the people.
