Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee and Yang Berhormat Mohamad Ali bin Tanjong attended a regional training programme on countering the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in Manila, the Philippines recently.
Titled Legislative and Policy Measures to Prevent and Counter the Use of Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies for Terrorism and Violent Extremism, the programme aimed to strengthen regional dialogue and parliamentary cooperation in addressing technological threats.
In his opening remarks, Speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives Faustino ‘Bojie’ G Dy II highlighted AI’s potential to improve public service delivery, while warning of the risks posed by its misuse – particularly in spreading information.
He stressed the importance of law enforcement, legislative oversight and close cooperation among ASEAN Parliaments in tackling cross-border crime.
Experts from the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and DLA Piper LLP delivered sessions on AI developments, digital security and human rights considerations.
Following the programme, the Philippines is set to propose a draft resolution on AI at the upcoming 47th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
