15.03.26 Holistic education drives student achievements

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh shared the efforts carried out by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in ensuring holistic education for all students which includes strengthening co-curricular activities through the implementation of the Program Sahsiah Pelajar (SPS) – based on four components: physical, spiritual, creativity, and service, including leadership, social, and life skills activities.

She said this in her ministerial statement on the third day of the First Meeting of the 22nd Session of the Legislative Council yesterday ‘Empowering National Education: Strategic Priorities for the Future-Ready Generation’.

She explained “This initiative aims to shape the identity, moral values, and the concept of ‘Kebruneian’ among students, while reinforcing the understanding and practice of the values of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).”

The MoE, she shared, “also continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Religious Affairs to strengthen religious education, particularly in the integrated system and Al-Quran subjects. This joint effort includes curriculum and assessment alignment, teacher capacity-building programs, and monitoring of implementation in both government and private schools.”

The minister added, “In line with the titah of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the National Nuzul Al-Quran Celebration for 1440 Hijrah to strengthen religious and Al-Quran education in all schools, not only in religious and Arabic schools under the MoE and private institutions, Alhamdulillah, since 2020, Al-Quran education has been implemented at the upper secondary level for all Muslim students. As a result of this synergy and joint effort with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, there has been a 20-per-cent average increase in students who fall under the category Alif and Ba (fluent and proficient) after three years of participation in this programme.”

The minister also shared several initiatives and the achievements resulting from the integrated efforts of the MoE and stakeholders during the 2025/2026 financial year.

Among the achievements include the publication of a Guidebook on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education; the development of the Greening Education Plan 2025-2035; the organisation of the 53rd Southesast Asian Ministers of Education Council Conference (SEAMEC53) themed ‘Greening Education for a Sustainable Southeast Asia: Empowering Change Through Collective Action” and the organisation of the 14th ASEAN School Games (ASG14), with the participation of 10 ASEAN countries, involving about 1,000 student-atheletes in eight sports events.

“Alhamdulillah, Brunei Darussalam achieved its best-ever result in this competition, winning a total of 18 medals, including four gold medals. The MoE made history by winning the Gold Award at the Prime Minister’s Innovation Award (AIP) for the first time, in addition to bringing home the Bronze Award and a Consolation Prize.” In addition the Brunei ICT Award (BICTA) saw a high number of student team participants, with a total of 88 entries.

At the 2025 Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) competition, students from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College were crowned as winners in the Senior Student cateogry. Meanwhile, two Merit Awards were won by Lambak Kanan Jalan 49 Primary School in the Junior Student category, and by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in the Tertiary Student category.

Students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism, IBTE has earned three awards, including the Medallion of Excellence and Best of Nation Award in culinary skills at the WorldSkills ASEAN 2025, as well as the Best of Nation Award at the WorldSkills Asia 2025 competition.
