29.04.26 Regional dialogue advances women’s empowerment

Two Legislative Council (LegCo) members attended the 5th Coordinating Committee Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA), held virtually on April 27.

Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee and Yang Berhormat Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Mumin represented the country at the meeting, which focused on the theme ‘Advancing Gender-Transformative Parliaments Towards a Future-Ready and Inclusive ASEAN Community’. The session hosted by the House of Representatives of the Philippines aimed to support the upcoming WAIPA Committee Meeting during the 47th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Assembly in Manila.

Yang Berhormat Hajah Rosmawatty highlighted that in line with Brunei Vision 2035, inclusive development, social well-being, and human capital development remain central pillars of the nation’s agenda.

She outlined several priority areas, including fostering a safe, inclusive, and responsive environment to address current challenges, as well as strengthening women’s leadership and participation through education, capacity building, and sustained support across all levels of leadership.

Meanwhile, Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee shared Brunei Darussalam’s achievements in implementing the WAIPA Women’s Political Participation and Leadership Framework 2024-2030, which was adopted in October 2024.

Among the initiatives highlighted was the organisation of the National Parliamentary Dialogue on Promoting Women’s Political Participation and Leadership (WPPL), held on June 18, 2025. She emphasised a structured approach to enhancing women’s participation and leadership through active community engagement, alongside continuous capacity-building efforts.

“These initiatives reflect Brunei’s commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable female participation in leadership roles,” she added.

The LegCo members also exchanged views and best practices in dialogue sessions ‘Catalyst for Change: How Women Drive Parliamentary Transformation’ and ‘Accelerating Women’s Economic Leadership Through Gender-Responsive Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Policies’.
