19.10.23 His Excellency Speaker of LegCo receives envoys

Bandar Seri Begawan, Thursday, 19 October 2023 - His Excellency Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council today received three courtesy calls from the foreign diplomatic missions to the country at the Legislative Council Building, Department of Councils of State today.

His Excellency Speaker received courtesy calls from His Excellency Dr. Achmad Ubaedillah, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam; His Excellency Mr. Tran Anh ​Vu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Brunei Darussalam; and His Excellency Dr Xiao Jianguo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam. The visits were held separately.

The two sides of Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia have enjoyed a close and long-standing friendship. During the courtesy call with His Excellency Dr. Achmad Ubaedillah, both sides have expressed their appreciation for the relationship and hope that it will continue to grow and be strengthened, especially in the fields of defense, people-to-people exchanges, Indonesian workforce in Brunei Darussalam and also further expanding economic opportunities, especially in the field of halal economy which has the potential to be improved and developed. Both parties believe that with close cooperation in overcoming any challenges in those areas they can reach the desired goal.


Both sides discussed on the field of trade, especially the transition of the new capital of  Indonesia in Kalimantan, the Republic of Indonesia welcomes investors to cooperate and take the opportunity to invest in the new capital.

The friendship between the two legislative bodies can also be seen by the exchange of visits between the two countries. Both parties always welcome cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries that are of mutual concern and interest and to explore cooperation opportunities in the relevant fields.


Meanwhile, Brunei Darussalam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam also have strong bilateral relations reflected through official visits by the Heads of State from both sides. The two countries have agreed to further enhance comprehensive partnerships in various fields including energy, people-to-people exchanges and tourism. Durign the courtesy call with His Excellency Mr. Tran Anh Vu, both sides have touched upon the cooperation between the Legislative Council of Brunei Darussalam and the National Assembly of Vietnam which is evident through the meetings attended to discuss matters of mutual interest. As one of the member countries of ASEAN, Brunei Darussalam is very proud of what Vietnam has achieved not only in upgrading its people but also in the rapid and advanced development growth.



His Excellency Mr. Tran Anh Vu also touched on the cooperation between the two parties in the field of higher education between the University of Brunei Darussalam and the University of Da Nang and hoped that it could be further developed and strengthened. In addition, His Excellency also expressed his admiration for Brunei Darussalam's progress in the halal sector and halal certification. Brunei Darussalam's commitment to ensuring the highest standards of halal quality makes the country an important country to become a regional hub for halal product certification, which has great potential for the entire ASEAN region.



Brunei Darussalam and China have a close and personal relationship and friendship for a long time which is clearly seen from the history of both countries. As one of the countries that offers assistance in the development of the country, His Excellency Speaker of the Legislative Council has expressed gratitude for the contribution that has been given not only to the country but also in developing the Asian region. During the courtesy call with His Excellency Dr. Xiao Jianguo, the two sides also touched on China's initiative for "One Belt One Road" and China hopes that the desired goals can be aligned in jointly achieving Brunei's Vision 2035.


His Excellency Dr. Xiao Jianguo also expressed his admiration for the involvement of Members of the Legislative Council in understanding grass root issues which can be seen through visit sessions such as to farms and agricultural sites in the country and also through dialogue sessions attended by Members of the Legislative Council. In discussing the future opportunities between the two countries, the Legislative Council hopes to be able to provide assistance and facilitate the opportunities in order to further improve the progress and cooperative relations of the two countries. Also looking at the relationship between the two legislative bodies of Brunei Darussalam and China, both parties are always strengthening and deepening the relationship through communication between the two and hope to further increase visits.

Also present during the Courtesy Calls were Honourable Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Judin bin Haji Asar, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers' Meeting & Clerk of the Councils; and Ms Rose Aminah binti Haji Ismail, Deputy Clerk of the Legislative Council.​
