​Legislative Council (LegCo) members Yang Berhormat Lau How Teck and Yang Berhormat Zainol bin Haji Mohamed participated in the ‘AIPA-FAO-IISD Joint Workshop on the Implementation of the ASEAN Guidelines on Promoting Responsible Investment in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry Sectors’ in Vientiane, Laos on April 24 and 25.

The workshop aimed at strengthening regional cooperation among Parliaments to create responsible investment in agriculture in the ASEAN region. It was a joint effort between the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

The workshop hoped to get parliamentarians strengthen their involvement in the process of forming an action plan to implement ASEAN Guidelines for Promoting Responsible Investment in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry (ASEAN RAI) at parliamentary level.

At the workshop, parliamentarians from AIPA member countries including the LegCo members delved into issues related to agricultural investment in the region. Among other things, the delegates participated in a discussion that provided space for the exchange and sharing of views and experiences and provided an action plan which will be used as a guideline for the regional Parliaments in playing an important role in encouraging responsible investment in the sector among ASEAN member countries.

The workshop’s outcome will be deliberated for approval at the AIPA General Assembly at the end of the year.
