28.06.24 LegCo Speaker receives Indonesian visitors

​The Legislative Council (LegCo) Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib received a goodwill visit from the Indonesian Head of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation at the LegCo building yesterday.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman met with committee head Dr H Fadli Zon from the Indonesian House of Representatives.

Accompanying Dr H Fadli Zon was seven members of the Indonesian committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation.

Also in attendance were Clerk to the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers’ Council and Clerk to the LegCo Dr Hajah Huraini binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hurairah and several LegCo members.

During the goodwill visit, both sides discussed the empowerment of Malay language in Parliaments as well as the importance of Malay language not only as an intermediate language but also as national heritage. The LegCo Speaker shared that Malay language is the official language of the country upheld by Malay Islamic Monarch philosophy and it is part of the way of life and identity of the Bruneian people.

Dr H Fadli Zon meanwhile shared that such initiative is an important step forward to ensure that the Malay language will continue to be strengthened.

The goodwill visit also saw a dialogue session between the delegation and LegCo members.

The discussion included initiatives to make Malay language as the working language of ASEAN region as more than 300 million people speak the language.
