There has been a decrease in the number of
people found driving under the influence (DUI), said Minister of
Transport and Infocommunications Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia
Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, citing data from the
Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) from 2019 to 2023.
He said in 2023, there were three cases of
driving under the influence, compared to five in 2022, two in 2021,
eight in 2020 and 14 in 2019, adding that drivers caught driving while
being affected by alcohol or drugs for the first time face a BND10,000
fine and two-year jail term, while for subsequent offence, a BND20,000
fine and four-year jail term.
Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia
Shamhary was responding to a call by Legislative Council (LegCo) member
Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Nasir to review the penalty
for driving under the influence during the 20th session of the LegCo
meeting yesterday.
The LegCo member also suggested the use of
an automated traffic enforcement system at strategic locations to
promote road safety, to which the minister said some 287 CCTVs have been
installed along the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge.
