13.05.24 Speaker of LegCo receives courtesy call from Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Yunnan Provincial People's Congress

​Monday, May 13, 2024, Bandar Seri Begawan - His Excellency Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council, received a courtesy call from His Excellency Mr. Li Xiaosan, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, accompanied by a delegation of five members from the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress. The delegation also included His Excellency Dr. Xiao Jianguo, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam.

Several Members of the Legislative Council were also present during the courtesy call.

This visit signifies the long-standing friendly relations and friendship between the two countries. The Speaker of the Legislative Council expressed that the diplomatic relations established since 1991 have strengthened various areas of cooperation between the two countries, including trade, investment, agriculture, education, tourism, and people-to-people relations, which are among the important aspects.

Additionally, both parties discussed in-depth the tourism and economic sectors as potential areas for further development. The Speaker of the Legislative Council stated that the People's Republic of China plays a significant role in the country's economic growth as one of the main investors and in expanding trade. His Excellency the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress affirmed that the People's Republic of China continuously supports its neighbouring countries in furthering their development through various fields of cooperation.

In sharing the direction of Brunei Darussalam, the Speaker of the Legislative Council highlighted that Brunei Darussalam consistently maintains peace and stability while making continuous efforts to diversify its economy to reduce reliance on oil and gas.

Both parties also discussed their respective legislative systems and the functions and roles of their Houses as the main channels for the people. They hope to further strengthen cooperation and relations between the two Houses through exchange visits in the near future.
