Brunei Darussalam’s commitment and dedication to promoting innovation and start-up companies as well as advancing digital transformation were highlighted by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee at the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians hosted by the National Assembly of Vietnam and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

She said the Sultanate has been promoting technology such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) through the establishment of the Council of Research and Advancement of Technology and Science (CREATES) in 2021.

Brunei has also set up the Brunei Innovation Lab aimed at nurturing innovation and digital ecosystem as well as technology entrepreneurs towards a sustainable economy.

LegCo member Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin, meanwhile, highlighted that the Sultanate focuses on empowering youth as agents of change in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through various means, such as organising dialogue sessions to promote the role of youth in reaching these goals.

He noted that Brunei has seven ethnic groups playing significant roles in promoting cultural diversity and unity while contributing to sustainable development.

Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa believes it is crucial that those involved in shaping the laws contribute their unique perspectives and energies.

The two-day conference, which ends today, features discussions on the growing importance of technology and innovation that are becoming more challenging.

Over 310 parliamentarians representing 75 countries as well as regional and international organisations attended the conference.
